Masoumeh and Ismael were cousins. They grew up in a small oil-rich town in Southern Iran, which had turned to a residential area for so many English and American soldiers. Engrossed in his books since childhood, he came to the conclusion that the authoritarian monarchy at the time could no longer be brooked, thus leading him to the idea of objecting to the dependent regime. He managed to invite her to his cause, and they were no longer cousins only, but comrades too. They then both headed for university in Tehran, the capital. By and by, their thirst for truth-seeking confrontation raged and the nations’ endeavor erupted into a revolution. Following the victorious Islamic revolution, they also got married. Ismael was appointed the head of Guardian Corps in their own town. Soon after that, Saddam and its allies launched their offensive into Iran, which came as a shock. Then, Ismael, a full-time fighter for his causes, had to dedicate himself to tracing Iraqi’s movements and devising plans. He was born a fighter and couldn’t sit still. In 1984, he embarked on a new mission and along with Iraqi anti-Saddam opposition groups formed “Badr Brigade”. Later, Iraqi captives came to realize that Iranians were not non-believers or fire-worshipper contrary to the wartime propaganda Iraqi forces were fed. Thus, they joined Badr Brigade to stand up against Saddam for all his mendacity and diabolic plots. In 1986, when Ismael got martyred, many had come to pay him their last visit at the funeral. “Ismael belongs to us,” Iraqis would say and they intended to take him to Iraq for the burial ceremony. His Communist friends from university time had also attended the ceremony. Ismael had fought all his life, championing his causes, beliefs, and his country. However, his creeds had informed all his behaviors and fostered a sense of kindness that won all those peoples’ hearts. Relover, a narrative in Hero’s Helpmate Collection, recounts Masoumeh’s memories from her life with the martyr, Ismael Daghayeghi. They had grown up with shared memories, which enlivens the book in its entirety. This is a best-selling book which has been republished several times. The book is based on an interview with the martyr’s wife and has blossomed into an engaging story, narrated from two points of view.
